A day trip to Wakefield, Yorkshire, to see the new Barbara Hepworth Gallery. We went by train to Wakefield Kirkgate which is the most run down station ever seen. Outside there is a public house similarly distressed with every window bricked – not boarded – up. The gallery is a five minute walk away down by the river. It’s a mix of silver grey boxes and it has quite an uncompromising simple beauty to it. I guess its a bit like a mirror without reflection. And inside it is similarly uncluttered with a room full of stunning BH sculptures, another with contemporary drawing, one with some of her bigger public works and her work bench, plus another contemporary sculptures – favourite there was something like Doneidin by Brancusi. All WONDERFUL. Go see. Plus free entry and Yorkshire Rarebit with some salad and crisps for ??4.95.
