An exhibition of ‘new’ German art at Saatchi Gallery in the Kings Road featured a large mirror which goes from perfectly straight to hippy hippy shake. That’s art imitating the fairground. I read that good art has a ‘narrative’ that evolves and deepens over time. Not convinced this will. I seem to remember it also asks us to look again and see more deeply. Maybe this does for a moment.
One aspect of art is to take something from one context and reveal its significance in another – bricks maybe. I liked the shaking mirror. Only one person can really do this and just once. So well done that man or woman who thought of sticking the distorted mirror in a gallery. It’s not got a lot of depth – apart from the bend of the wobble – but it does also remind us that art originates in play time which keeps Jack from becoming a dull boy. So do visit the Saatchi Gallery whenever you can. Its full of fun and creative inspiration, in a beautiful building in a lovely location, and its free. Thank you Mr Saatchi.Category Archives: Uncategorized

Looking in to Barbara Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield
A day trip to Wakefield, Yorkshire, to see the new Barbara Hepworth Gallery. We went by train to Wakefield Kirkgate which is the most run down station ever seen. Outside there is a public house similarly distressed with every window bricked – not boarded – up. The gallery is a five minute walk away down by the river. It’s a mix of silver grey boxes and it has quite an uncompromising simple beauty to it. I guess its a bit like a mirror without reflection. And inside it is similarly uncluttered with a room full of stunning BH sculptures, another with contemporary drawing, one with some of her bigger public works and her work bench, plus another contemporary sculptures – favourite there was something like Doneidin by Brancusi. All WONDERFUL. Go see. Plus free entry and Yorkshire Rarebit with some salad and crisps for ??4.95.

Vince gives his Simon & Patrick guitar an outing at the Monday open mic at the White Lion in Streatham. A rough and ready session that attracts a nice mix of rough diamonds and polished gems. That’s why the chicken crossed the road!
